Hello, I'm Abbie Short, a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate. I earned my master's degree in Counseling with a focus on play therapy from Southern Methodist University. I also hold a degree in psychology from Texas A&M, where my passion for people and learning led me to pursue a career in counseling.

During my graduate program, I received training to counsel children, teens, couples, and adults, with specialized training in play and activity therapy. Before joining 316 Counseling Center, I provided counseling services at SMU’s Center for Family Counseling, primarily working with children and adolescents. Additionally, I volunteered at Children's Hospital in Dallas, where I collaborated with child life specialists to offer play and support to families needing to stay overnight in the hospital.

I feel privileged to work with children and families. Empowering children with the ability to express themselves and manage their emotions can greatly benefit them as they grow older. I believe that all individuals have the capacity for self-improvement, creativity, and change. By fostering trust and respect, counseling can be a catalyst for meaningful transformation. My goal is to establish a supportive and empathetic atmosphere that promotes self-discovery and growth.

Play is vital for everyone, and I find that my play typically involves a range of creative outlets. Anywhere from trying new recipes for baking, getting lost in a fictional book, or searching for hidden treasures at the local thrift or antique stores. When I am not working, I am most likely doing some creative challenge.
